Weekly Memory & Motherboard Price Guide: March 2001 1st Edition

Introduction
It's time once again for AnandTech's Memory and Motherboard price guide.
The basic goal is to provide you with the best deals, and follow price trends
of the listed products. We have selected a leading team of on-line vendors,
and will be tracking their progress on weekly basis. Please note that all vendors
were selected according to their best price offered. Some vendors may ask that
you place a phone-order to make sure that you receive our listed price; others
simply ask that you mention where you found the price (in this case AnandTech).
We have tried to eliminate vendors with low feedback rating, but we do encourage
you to do some research before purchasing any product from this list.
If you encounter any problems with a vendor on our list, please email us, and we will take appropriate action. Remember that we will only list vendors with positive customer feedback. If you have any suggestions, don't hesitate to let us know.
Also be sure to check out AnandTech's Hot Deals Forum for even more great memory, motherboard, CPU, video card and other technology buys.

This Week
This week we've spiced up our Memory and Motherboard price guide with the addition of ten VIA Apollo Pro 133A-based Socket 370/Slot-1 motherboards. As you might recall, the Apollo Pro 133A chipset delivers PC100 and PC133 memory support along with AGP 4X, AC’97 & MC’97, and 133MHz FSB features. The flexibility of this platform as well prices of motherboards based on this chipset are comparable to those of i815-based boards which convinced us to add Apollo Pro 133A boards to our price guide.
As far as prices of the other motherboards that we list, not much has changed since our last guide. This is especially true with KT133-based boards which have., for the moment, stabilized in price. Both Socket-370 and Socket-423 motherboards have remained quiet in terms of price with no significant shifts.
In the memory arena the situation is reminiscent of our price guide dating back to early February where we saw almost every memory module drop in price. This week the drops are not as dramatic as before but are nonetheless present as memory prices continue to take a nosedive.

Leading the pack in price drops is undoubtedly the 256MB module of PC800 RDRAM. As we have seen in the past and probably will continue to see in the future, RDRAM will continue its downward turn in price due to the increase of RDRAM-based solutions which are gaining in numbers. Not too far behind RDRAM is DDR SDRAM with also large price drops, specifically 256MB of PC2100 DDR SDRAM leading the way dropping in price to $260. As with RDRAM, DDR SDRAM will most likely continue to fall in price as we see more DDR-based solutions enter the market. We recently learned that Crucial is offering 128MB of PC2100 DDR SDRAM for $60.29 however these modules are only certified for use with Gigabyte DDR motherboards so if you do plan on buying these modules do so at your own risk.
PC133 and PC100 memory continue to drop in price this week although the drops are not as pronounced as we have seen in past weeks which could be foreshadowing a coming stabilization in price. Nonetheless, 256MB modules of both PC133 CAS2 and CAS3 are still a steal with prices at $94.50 and $66 respectively.

Not much has changed with i815-based motherboards as prices have remained almost nearly the same as last week with a few drops and a slight price hike with the MSI 815E Pro. We still continue to recommend the ASUS CUSL2 board due to excellent design, stability, and overclocking features which are above par as far as i815E motherboards are concerned. The Transcend TS-ASL3 is a good buy if you're in the market for a no frills i815E board for a sound price.
We've added two more i815EP motherboards to our list for this week, the Gigabyte
GA-6OXE and the MSI 815EP PRO-R. Because Intel is beginning to decrease the
supply of i815E chipsets, we will more than likely see more and more i815EP-based
motherboards enter the market driving the prices lower and lower. Our recommendation
for an i815EP board is still the ASUS CUSL2-C which is very similar to the
solid CUSL2.
New to our motherboard bunch are VIA Apollo Pro 133A-based motherboards which
are well priced in comparison to i815E motherboards. Since Slot-1 Pentium
and Celerons are becoming more and more scarce we recommend the Socket-370
ASUS CUV4X which closely follows the design of the ASUS P3V4X, winner of AnandTech's
Gold Editor's Choice Award. The CUV4X, which performs much like its P3V4X
cousin, excels in every area since it exemplifies ASUS's tradition of solid,
high performance motherboards. We also recommend the Soyo SY-7VCA, winner
of AnandTech's Silver Editor's Choice Award, which has quite a few overclocking
and tweaking features and reigns in slightly below the CUV4X in price. Our
choice for a dual processor motherboard is the Microstar 694D Pro as it has
been the most stable dual-CPU Apollo Pro 133A solution
to enter our labs thus far which comes with quite a few features.
Prices amongst i850 motherboards have fallen since our last guide with the most noticeable drops with the ASUS P4T and Gigabyte GA-8TX.

As mentioned earlier most of the motherboards in our guide have remained quiet for this week and no where else is this more apparent than with the prices of KT133-based boards.
We've added one more KT133A motherboards to the mix, the Iwill KK266-R which comes with onboard RAID support. Out of these we recommend Iwill KK266 which we recently reviewed and found to have a clean layout, superb performance and stability features, and possess the ability to overclock and make tweaks right in the BIOS.
Prices with AMD 760-based motherboards have been in flux especially with the ASUS A7M266 motherboard where the price increase reflects the short supply of this board due to shortages of the AMD 760 chipset. Prices of both AMD 760 and ALi MAGiK 1 boards are still high in comparison to both the KT133 and KT133A motherboards but that will most likely change as we will begin to see more and more of these DDR-powered solutions enter the market.
