It's difficult to make a bulky laptop look pretty. The lid reminds me of the Nvidia Shield TV with those lines and angles, I wonder if that's intentional?
Because no matter what some "dreamers" want to believe, we're still a long way from being able to cool desktop class performance parts in a confined laptop chassis.
I personally find the "mobile gaming rig" nonsensical. You pay a heck of a lot more for a device that's not as powerful as an equivalent and much cheaper desktop, it's not as quiet or flexible (upgrade, OC), it is not as comfortable to use unless you connect gaming mouse, keyboard and a proper LCD (17" for gaming is so '90s) just to get some sort of mobility. Meaning once in a while you can move it to the next room with the caveat that the gaming experience will be very laptopy and cramped until you put it back to home-base.
@close: You're really not taking into account alternative lifestyles. I don't think this is aimed for people with their own apartment working a 9 to 5 job. Think about gamers who are constantly on the move and who have plenty of money to spare.
@bakaa_toroi, I completely understand special needs as I'm typing this comment on a laptop that has a much steeper price tag. But the difference is that my laptop (just like the W700 - retired, by the way - and the Dell Precision) is that they cater to a completely different market where comfort isn't necessarily a priority, results are. They are a job tool, not a hobby and outside of that comfortable use they will offer most of what a desktop may offer. Which is why my custom HP Zbook G3 build cost ~6500E.
Just because you can afford it doesn't make a seriously compromised device good. It just makes it your only option but a crappy one nonetheless. Nobody ever said "oh, I wish I could have a 6Kg laptop to lug around for the occasional game on a 17" screen, with a few hours of autonomy, mediocre keyboard (no mouse), and if possible one that makes my ears bleed in full load". The problem isn't just that it's expensive, plenty of expensive things out there deliver a good experience. It's that it's expensive and it's a jack of all trades but master of none.
When you are constantly on the move how useful is a machine that weighs ~6Kg (without accessories) and can provide relatively short periods of battery gaming at a time? You always have to have a desk for it since the weight and temps exclude it from being a LAPtop. So you can't use it on the plane, in a train, or while waiting for them.
The worst part about it is that it provides a profoundly flawed gaming experience since the screen is is so small and the keyboard and ergonomics are questionable. I'm sure that you can find a number of people to buy this but then again I'm sure you can use an iPad as a phone if you really wanted to.
I'm not saying people shouldn't buy it, just that it's crap and people buy it only because they have no other options or for bragging rights. This is the niche of niches.
How in the hell can you say that it's crap when you haven't used it? Holy shit, you talk out of your ass so much it's actually insane. As for compromised performance and not the same performance as desktops, no, you are absolutely wrong and again have no idea what you are talking about: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NC2blnl0WTE
The amount of bullshit you are spewing is simply insane. Such arrogance from someone who is simply put, wrong, is astonishing.
Unless Eurocom invented the 17" LCD that's actually a 24- 27" I will call BS on your comment. Or maybe they invented the silent 60mm fans ;). I wasn't born yesterday kid, I don't need a youtube video to tell me what it's like to carry around a 6Kg laptop, how one sounds in full load, that a 17: LCD is a joke as far as diagonal goes and that you get the same level of performance from a desktop half the price.
Ammendment: You probably pay closer to a third the price if you're looking at the high end configs.
You pay "close to 5 digits" for a device that towards the high end is a chore to move around (5.5Kg and a "featherweight" 660W PSU) and worse, you get a tiny screen, mediocre keyboard, mouse and speakers (meaning you'll still have to attach your own) and because of the cooling onstraints it will always be behind what you can achieve with the very same components in the much cheaper desktop. So if you think this is not a horribly compromised gaming machine I can already stop wondering how come so many kids these days call their years old mid range PC with a 20" TN screen a "gaming PC".
Right, I'm a kid because I have a differing opinion than you on the internet, and don't actually try and pass my opinion off as fact like you do. No possible way that I own a house.
You said the performance of THIS particular laptop does not match the performance of an identical desktop, that is complete and utter bullshit. This performs just as good as any desktop, if not better, in a somewhat portable form factor.
If you don't like DTRs, that's fine, but clearly there's a market for them otherwise. Calling them crap makes you look like nothing but a moron.
I don't get how you're talking shit to me like I don't have a good gaming PC. My desktop setup costs over $6000 and I have 2 24" monitors (one IPS, one TN), a 5960x and 2 GTX 1070s, etc. That doesn't mean I don't still like DTRs.
"You said the performance of THIS particular laptop does not match the performance of an identical desktop, that is complete and utter bullshit."
I think you'll find the point close was getting at was comparable pricing versus performance. However, even with "identical" configurations like say, a SLI GTX 1080 in a desktop when compared to a SLI GTX 1080 in this laptop will yield measurable differences due to space and cooling constraints. Yes, there's no argument that the mobile and desktop GPUs are closer than ever to one another in performance, but there are still losses due to the different form factors AND it might just be that NV as a company is in a position to back off from a very aggressive desktop product launch so their like-model laptop parts will be placed within striking distance so the company has something interesting to market to mobile buyers as they do represent a healthy portion of NV's GPU sales these days.
"I don't get how you're talking shit to me like I don't have a good gaming PC. My desktop setup costs over $6000 and I have 2 24" monitors (one IPS, one TN), a 5960x and 2 GTX 1070s, etc. That doesn't mean I don't still like DTRs."
As for this...is it really necessary to boast about hardware you own? No one here can verify your claims about the components and it's easy enough to invent such things. Doing that demonstrates more about the character of the person at they keyboard, allowing a reader to infer quite a bit about someone on the other end of the wire, and the insights gained usually aren't the objectives of the person making the statement.
I showed a video that shows IDENTICAL desktop and laptop performance. I'm not sure how you can claim otherwise when a video showed that yes, a laptop and desktop can have identical performance. There are NO compromises being made there whatsoever. There's nothing else to be said about that.
I talked about my specs because he said I probably have a 20 inch TN panel. He's the one who dragged specs into it, I merely defended myself from clueless morons like him. Don't stick up for him, you're no better than him when you do that.
As an addendum for me "not owning what I said I do", I posted several pictures on reddit under basically the same name as on here, Here's a picture of my GPUs: http://i.imgur.com/MPJHinG.jpg Hey look, here's me giving a thumbs up: http://i.imgur.com/ZbhVTzU.jpg
If he has the right to call me out and accuse me of having shit hardware, I have the right to defend myself.
What hardware you own is not the point. The fact that you think a high end CPU/GPU in a very confined space like a laptop can reach the same potential as one in a properly cooled case is damn ignorant or at the very least inexperienced.
On the other hand calling a machine with a 17" screen, mediocre keyboard and speakers a "gaming machine" is the same as when other call their mid-range old desktop a gaming machine. having a good enough GPU isn't enough for a gaming machine. screen, keyboard and mouse are half of the gaming experience and if you don't have those you don't have a gaming machine, you have a benchmarking machine. One that will make your ears bleed and will throttle in situations that can push the desktop to the limit simply because there's no screenshot that you can post on reddit to disprove the laws of physics.
The fact you think they are a BIG compromise when DTRs have been around for years and years, and have never been anywhere close to what they are today, proves you have no clue what you are talking about. There are laptops with i7 6700ks and GTX 1080 SLIs that don't throttle at all at stock, combined with 4k 120Hz panels and fairly decent speakers for once. Look back at the DTRs of 10 years ago and think back to how shitty they were compared to what they are today. You've made it clear that DTRs aren't for you, and that's fine, but clearly there's a huge demand for them otherwise they wouldn't spend so much R&D on them, and they wouldn't make them in the first place. DTRs are way better than they have ever been. Sure, they may not have the best keyboards, but they are certainly usable (not that you would know, you likely haven't even used one), and their panels are amazing.
If you don't like DTRs, that's fine, but to call them all crappy is just idiotic. There are tones of people who love DTRs and use them to play games on them every day. No need to shit on DTRs and everyone who likes DTRs because of how narrow minded you are.
"As an addendum for me "not owning what I said I do", I posted several pictures..."
It's the internet, anyone can post or repost anything.
"If he has the right to call me out and accuse me of having shit hardware, I have the right to defend myself."
Perhaps, but dropping a profanity-laced post containing unverifiable bragging and anger may not give you a lot of credibility in the eyes of any other casual observer. It certainly won't do you any good when you're trying to make a contentious counter-point against a person holding a diametrically opposed viewpoint. Doing that sort of thing over the internet is usually a waste of time.
I actually don't "own" that hardware. I suggested as much when I said it's a work related thing where conveniences like reduced weight, great keyboard, etc. aren't as important. Trying to analyze "characters" over the internet says a lot about you too ;).
WoW i agree with comment.. You killed this guy. I dont think he can come back . He must stay away to keep what dignity he has left. If he comes back he will uterly submit to his demise.
You were the one beginning to insult him, when he returned the favor you went all butthurt, proved none of his legit arguments wrong and instead started boasting about your 6000$ gaming rig. Impressive. Maybe there is an audience for this kind of laptop but most of them are probably stupid braggards - for like 10 people in the world this thing actually makes sense.
My god. the guy in that video has possibly the most annoying voice my earballs have ever had the displeasure of witnessing. Couldn't watch the video. Gave up skipping through it even.
Maybe you're one of those niche trying to defend his purchase?
Its loud as hell, hot as hell, no matter what, the keyboard + touchpad are sh*t vs real gaming keyboard and mouse. 17 inches for a gamer?-
I think the concept of an external GPU box is the best one. You can bring your full brick when you want without having to worry about thermals or sound.
Well, I'm one of those people with the alternative lifestyle. My job IS traveling, so I spend anything from 12-16 nights a month in hotels. Battery life means little, as when I have time to use my laptop, I have outlets nearby. There is little point to me building a desktop system that I wouldn't even have the opportunity to touch for more than half the month. So for someone like me who wants a better gaming experience, and it must be portable, "gaming laptops" are pretty much the only choice we have. Granted, I have no desire to lug around a 17"+ laptop/desktop replacement, so I'm currently using a 15" Sager with a 980M in it, but its all about finding the right balance of compromises that works for you.
No need to troll @JoeyJoJo123, I HAVE a better job, one that I enjoy. Far more than all the IT stuff I was doing before. I just happen to like gaming too, so I make it work. And I have yet to play a MOBA :P
@JamsCB, as I said, the niche of niches. There may be some people who somehow spend 20 days a month in a hotel and *need* to play games so lugging around such a compromised device is the only option. But that's the whole point, it doesn't mean it's a good option. It's what you need, not what you want.
It's too big to carry comfortably and too small to have a good gaming experience - and being a passionate enough gamer that carries around such a device doesn't really go hand in hand with the willingness of having such a compromised gaming experience. A passionate gamer who can't stay away from games played at max details but you have no problem with the 17" screen, poor keyboard, poor sound, etc.? You don't see the compromise here?
Wow, where to start here - My AW18 is a no compomise machine, as far as I can tell.
Specs: i7 Extreme, 2133MHz RAM, Dual 880M GTX 8GB each, 3GB storage, and two SSDs, triple antenna wifi, Blu ray player 18.4" screen, and I run it @ 4.4GHz.
How is this flawed?
Nobody games on battery... And the weight? The backpack takes care of that. I've been carrying DTR machine around since 1997. I've been to six countries so far this year.
And sat right in front of an 18.4" screen is hardly small.
And to the rest of you - frequent travellers CANNOT have a desktop, these ugly machines are our only option for performance.
I think my 3DMark11 score is nearly 13,000. What is your machine?
Yes, if you sit close enough even a 5" screen is good enough...
"these ugly machines are our only option for performance." That was my whole point but you guys are too busy defending your choices to understand. I'm not saying you can't play on them. But they are a big compromise. You're forced to accept it because there is no other way for you.
"You're forced to accept it because there is no other way for you"
I think some of us are trying to tell you you're wrong. We buy them because we like them. If you havent used one, how can you judge? The sound and keyboards arent as much of a compromise as you make (especially since lot use headphones - I dont). The screens are down right fantastic - and I have an X34 for my desktop (which is also great). People like different things. It's you are are trying to justify and explain why we do by saying we dont have a choice, its what we need not what we want, etc. I buy them because I like them - they are fantastic pieces of technology and performance in a small package. I also happen to like my desktop. I dont see it as mutually exclusive.
Actually these new laptops are on par with desktop in terms of performance. I'm at a point in my life where i don't want to see another desktop case in my house. I'll gladly shell out a couple of hundreds for a gaming laptop.
It's design reminds me a lot of 90's era Compaq Presario laptops that had a center screen style hinge. But really, it's very similar to Pentium 4 Toshiba Satellites like the S205. The "shoulders" to either side of the screen hinge which presumably contain the speakers are really, really similar looking. While appearance preferences are widely varied between buyers, I don't find Eurocom's borrowing of those bygone design queues appealing at all.
As an aside, the company's logo looks tacky and outdated too.
Well finally something I can agree with you on :). A clean look like the professional lines from HP or Dell is a much better choice if you ask me. But aesthetics are really subjective and these guys aren't asking me because I'm not their target audience.
Most gaming laptops (DTRs) are designed to look like kitschy toys because that's what the customer drools at.
"because that's what the customer drools at" - you aren't much different, maybe a different flavor, but pretty much the same product. Depending on how far you manage to go intellectually, you may find yourself agreeing more and more with me. This is not an insult though, I know first hand how hard it is to break free from the cesspool of mediocrity, conformism and consumerism.
Wow, Dell and HP are not very attractive IMO. I have one from work, and it's hideous. It mightbe "professional" but I wouldnt want something like that for me. Compared to the Alienwares from a few years ago, this is pretty toned down and strikes a good balance to me.
That is the Elephant in the room regarding Desktop Replacement PCs in general.
It seems so odd, the most expensive computers are usually the uglist.
I'm sat on pins waiting for a pascal notebook, but I'll wait & see what Alienware do with it, (they are usually the least-offensive designs in this segment), and thus I'm on my second one.
Well, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I have ordered this beast and it should be reaching me pretty soon. I have no problem lugging my Alienware M17xR4 and Illegear RX-17 with GTX970M SLI (incidentally also made by Clevo) for ages now. And love their design and style. HP and Dell is too seriously compromised a machine for me. They are more meant for kids who love to play angry birds.
For anyone who wants one. I dont understand why just because some of the people here dont want it, it must be a stupid idea. I dont like pickup trucks, or EVs but they arent stupid. This laptop is by definition a niche product - even if it was thin and light it would be at this price. Those of us who like them and use them do so for many different reasons the same as all of you have different desktop solutions. Are mini-ATX's silly as well? For the record, I have a desktop and a DTR (previous model of this). I like having the DTR because I can use it in the kitchen where my kids are, and not in the upstairs room where my desktop is in my office. Yes, I use a separate mouse, but no keyboard or monitor - plenty of others do - so what? And others like them for a variety of reasons from benchmarking to games to work. What difference does it make?
I don't know... The idea of 'gaming laptop' fundamentally seems like a complete nonsense to me. Battery life is non-existant with that setup, it could just as well go batteryless and save weight and space, temperatures these machines operate are pretty high and in the end you still want to play with normal keyboard and mouse on a big screen (well, 24"+ big...). Plus when put on heavy load they resemble 1U server fans with the noise.
I am not saying it can't find buyer or a reasonable use case, but I can't see it.
That would indeed seem pretty sensible, but this particular laptop does defy reason. I'm sure Eurocom is aware of that fact and they're targeting a small niche market with it.
How about someone who has to travel for work and they find themselves away from home in a company paid for hotel room more days per year than they find themselves at home? What if they want to play the latest games at max settings during their evenings?
I have such a friend actually who travels all over doing audits all the time.
Still better off with a Bitfenix case keyboard and mouse (which he could place in the now empty laptop bag) and a HDMI cable which you can connect to any hotel room TV.
I would disagree, my friend has to travel sometimes for 1-3 weeks at a time. He prefers to carry one luggage for convenience (1 luggage, 1 carry on). It's not a weight of laptop or luggage, or lack of luggage carts, it's the convenience of only needing two hands. Fitting a desktop in that luggage with all said accessories and minimum 5 days worth of business attire doesn't fit. You can try it. We did.
I've tried carrying a Shuttle SFF PC instead - it doesn't travel well, you need a dedicated hard case.
And the screen arrived cracked at the top, despite my best efforts to pack it safely.
Doing the HDMI cable to hotel TV isn't great either - the lag is quite noticable, and recently I've seen some hotels (in Vietnam), where the TV was mounted so tight to the wall, the HDMI ports were inaccessible.
Long story-short, you need to CARRY-ON your device to ensure its safety, and security (arrived in Bangkok two months back sans baggage with two brand new Cisco APs in it - I got the bag in the end, but it could have been gone forever).
That depends on what that sort of person is willing/able to spend on a laptop and whether or not they're willing to lug along $2500+ worth of laptop with them. I was in a job for a couple years that required a lot of travel. About half my time was spent in hotel rooms. While most of the places where I stayed were decent and in areas where I felt safe, I was reluctant to take anything of value. Since one of these laptops can flirt with $10k in fully fledged out configuration, it would absolutely not be something I'd want to take along on with me even if I was on the road that much.
Were I doing that sort of work again, I'd grab something from the bottom of the bargain barrel like an HP Stream, dump any personal data of importance up to a storage provider, and make do with whatever its anemic CPU/iGPU combo could handle in the realms of entertainment. Unwinding and relaxing at the end of the day is important, but I could walk away from ten stolen/lost/broken budget laptops before approaching the cost of something like the E9E2.
I carry a Kensington lock with me. It has a 4-digit code, and it well made. I know it is well made as I was unable to cut one of them with a hacksaw - to my surprise.
When I go downstairs for dinner, etc, my AW18 is anchored to a variety of things, as you never know who could enter your room.
Even at home in the UK, it get anchored to the living room radiator when I'm out for the evening. I've been robbed three times, though not in 10 years.
I laugh reading these comments about how heavy it is whining about the way oh it's not mobile it's a lot more mobile than trying to Lug around a desktop. 7 kilos is nothing unless you're on a respirator.
@HollyDOL - Because you normally loop your desktop for a week? I have the previous model. Overclocked, and no hear problems. It *rarely* gets turned off.
Well, not really loop or these days, but back on university some tasks were running over a week in row (then again, computer budget was heavily limited to the lowest of low end). If the machine frozen or failed it would mean to run the task again from the very beginning.
Alas you are right - gaming notebook is not a workstation required to run under load long periods of time.
@meaker @johnksss do not dirt your holy DM-3 by trying to explain to these dumb dumb haters. We all know what it's capable of. These haters are just jeaolous because their desktops are slower than your laptop. ;). Btw nice scores for FS ultra.but it seems like we still can't past that 2.2Ghz core clock barrier yet 😁
Very fun inside this thread... I can smell a lot of jealousy and stupid comments. Get a life or buy the beast!! This updated Clevo can contain 6700K@4.8 GHz. The need for Desktop for processing power is not the same anymore. LOL If the need for a desktop is still there, maybe you where stupid enough to purchase a nice thin slim BGA machine? Lots to choose from. HaHa I see that several here grinning on the size of this laptop and think it is ugly... Maybe they was stupid enough to purchase a BGA machine and now regret their purchase? I just have to laugh!!
What an Abomination. From my experience 9 out of 10 laptops never get moved at all, but were bought for that exact purpose. They wont hear until they learned the hard way.

One that will make your ears bleed and will throttle in situations that can push the desktop to the limit simply because there's no screenshot that you can post on reddit to disprove the laws of physics.
ipkpjersi - Saturday, August 27, 2016 - link

Granted, I have no desire to lug around a 17"+ laptop/desktop replacement, so I'm currently using a 15" Sager with a 980M in it, but its all about finding the right balance of compromises that works for you.JoeyJoJo123 - Friday, August 26, 2016 - link
Honestly, get a better job, one that doesn't require you to stay away from home half of every month using a garbage laptop to play garbage MOBA games.JamsCB - Friday, August 26, 2016 - link
No need to troll @JoeyJoJo123, I HAVE a better job, one that I enjoy. Far more than all the IT stuff I was doing before. I just happen to like gaming too, so I make it work. And I have yet to play a MOBA :Pclose - Saturday, August 27, 2016 - link
Notmyusualid - Saturday, August 27, 2016 - link
Wow, where to start here - My AW18 is a no compomise machine, as far as I can tell.Specs: i7 Extreme, 2133MHz RAM, Dual 880M GTX 8GB each, 3GB storage, and two SSDs, triple antenna wifi, Blu ray player 18.4" screen, and I run it @ 4.4GHz.
What is your machine?
close - Saturday, August 27, 2016 - link
Yes, if you sit close enough even a 5" screen is good enough..."these ugly machines are our only option for performance." That was my whole point but you guys are too busy defending your choices to understand. I'm not saying you can't play on them. But they are a big compromise. You're forced to accept it because there is no other way for you.
lunarmit - Saturday, August 27, 2016 - link
"You're forced to accept it because there is no other way for you"I think some of us are trying to tell you you're wrong.

This kind of ugly has nothing to do with the bulk, but with the awfully dated "kids from the 70s think its cool" design. There is an easy remedy to this atrocity - soften flat surfaces and sharp corners, remove the unnecessary "details", fix the fugly logo.
The guy who designed this poor thing was either hired by a relative, or by someone who has no clue of design aesthetics.
BrokenCrayons - Friday, August 26, 2016 - link
It's design reminds me a lot of 90's era Compaq Presario laptops that had a center screen style hinge. But really, it's very similar to Pentium 4 Toshiba Satellites like the S205. The "shoulders" to either side of the screen hinge which presumably contain the speakers are really, really similar looking. While appearance preferences are widely varied between buyers, I don't find Eurocom's borrowing of those bygone design queues appealing at all.As an aside, the company's logo looks tacky and outdated too.

Plus when put on heavy load they resemble 1U server fans with the noise.I am not saying it can't find buyer or a reasonable use case, but I can't see it.

How about someone who has to travel for work and they find themselves away from home in a company paid for hotel room more days per year than they find themselves at home? Still better off with a Bitfenix case keyboard and mouse (which he could place in the now empty laptop bag) and a HDMI cable which you can connect to any hotel room TV.Sushisamurai - Friday, August 26, 2016 - link
We did.Notmyusualid - Saturday, August 27, 2016 - link
I'd like to disagree with you.I've tried carrying a Shuttle SFF PC instead - it doesn't travel well, you need a dedicated hard case.
BrokenCrayons - Friday, August 26, 2016 - link
