I would call the lack of a "selfie camera" on any phone a feature, and a darn good one.
  • beginner99 - Thursday, November 1, 2018 - link

Me too. It's at least a new idea also with the 2 screens. But then again there is the huge size. I want a phone I can put in my front pockets. 5" is pretty much max for that especially when sitting down.
  • piroroadkill - Thursday, November 1, 2018 - link

I feel like they've actually nailed the design here, it's interesting, and quite a lot different than the competition. But I agree with you, I'm tired of all the huge phones. They've shrunk the bezels here to absolutely nothing, but still made the phone enormous. This phone in a 5" form would be TINY and actually pocketable, whilst still retaining the stunning appearance.
  • haukionkannel - Thursday, November 1, 2018 - link

Yep. A 5” version of this would be super good! Small size, big screen. And the back screen would not have to be so big because you use it mainly for takin selfies, so the electricity straw would be small exspecially if you can turn that back screen of when not taking pictures!
  • jospoortvliet - Saturday, November 3, 2018 - link

73mm width isn't too bad actually, though more than I like to use. I wont consider a phone over 70 ;-)
  • eek2121 - Friday, November 2, 2018 - link

I've never had a smartphone not fit in my pocket. Just how small of pants are you wearing? Toddler size?
  • NewBro - Thursday, November 1, 2018 - link

This I can't agree more. Not everyone like to take selfie and in fact there are some like me who despise it. I haven't used my front camera on my S6 once.
  • PixyMisa - Thursday, November 1, 2018 - link

But it does have a front-facing camera for selfies. It's just on the other front.
  • Samus - Friday, November 2, 2018 - link

The thing is, it still has a camera you can use for video chats\selfies. Just turn the phone around like you would any phone, with the obvious difference being there is a screen on the back.

    This is a genius phone.
  • stanleyipkiss - Wednesday, October 31, 2018 - link

This is genius. I can't believe Apple, Samsung or even LG or ANYONE else hasn't done this yet. Making a 2nd screen on the back a dedicated selfie-screen would negate the need for unsightly notches.

Sure, no face-ID or unlock, but come on! Under-screen fingerprint plus this thing ... makes Samsung cry for investing so much R&D into a camera BELOW the screen to get rid of notches.
  • nathanddrews - Wednesday, October 31, 2018 - link

You know what the next step is, right? Cameras and screens on both sides. LOL
  • ToTTenTranz - Wednesday, October 31, 2018 - link

    And notches.

    Lots of notches.
  • Yojimbo - Thursday, November 1, 2018 - link

The welfie! You take a pic of yourself and what you are looking at at the same time. You show yourself reacting to what you see.
  • dshess - Wednesday, October 31, 2018 - link

AND, you probably can't put a case on that, so you'll need a replacement sooner!
  • wolrah - Wednesday, October 31, 2018 - link

I've had smartphones since the original iPhone and never had a case. All of my phones have their fair share of dings and dents, but never any significant damage that actually affects usability.

I know people who break phones all the time, even in cases.

What that tells me is it's a user problem and some people really just need to learn how to hold on to their phone better or not to put it in precarious places.
  • JoeyJoJo123 - Wednesday, October 31, 2018 - link

    ^ This.

It's just clumsy, stupid people. They're paying their stupid tax when this stuff happens.
  • Sunrise089 - Wednesday, October 31, 2018 - link

Agree. People freak out when they see my bare phone. My first smartphone was an iPhone 3G. I dropped it and cracked the screen and told myself ‘gotta be more careful.’ I’ve gone the last decade with no case and no phone damage.

I don’t begrudge anyone who wants a case for whatever reason makes sense to them, but suggestions that cases are necessary to prevent phone damage are bogus.
  • mkaibear - Thursday, November 1, 2018 - link

All my phones since the feature phone days have had a case, and so they haven't had any dings or dents. Which means that for a one-time investment of about a tenner for each phone I've "earned" way more than that on the resale value.

Not putting them in a case and letting them accumulate damage is most definitely a fool's bargain.
  • jabber - Thursday, November 1, 2018 - link

I like a case on my phones purely because it adds weight and some 'heft' to it. Makes it feel more for the money.
  • ajp_anton - Wednesday, October 31, 2018 - link

Sure you can attach the case to the side of the phone. The case would act as the two covers of a book, but with a phone in the middle instead of all the pages. Just flip between the first and last "page" of the book to switch sides on the phone.
  • Dragonstongue - Wednesday, October 31, 2018 - link

^.^..that would be very nice IMO..I see many use the "wallet style" case, this would be the perfect phone to use a similar style, protects the phone AND you could actually use like a book..O.o
  • jabber - Thursday, November 1, 2018 - link

    Some sort of clear case?
  • Mr Perfect - Wednesday, October 31, 2018 - link

Sure you can. Just get one of the clear TPU rubbery cases, they're like $10 on Amazon. It's more then enough protection if you're not drunk-dropping your phone all the time.
  • zodiacfml - Wednesday, October 31, 2018 - link

Wow. Just WoW! I'm in my late 30's and rarely impressed.
ZTE impressed me previously with their Axon 7 but never available to the rest of the world.

I never liked glass backs until now. This could easily get rid of personalized phone cases with people's interests.
I also like their "Courage" to get rid of the selfie camera. There was a time where selfie's where made using the main/rear camera.
I just had my S8 last year and wished I could burn money for this.
  • Dribble - Thursday, November 1, 2018 - link

They've not really got rid of the selfie camera - they just don't need a camera on both sides as they have displays on both sides, so you can still take selfies and look at yourself doing it.
  • Xex360 - Wednesday, October 31, 2018 - link

It's great that someone is doing some interesting designs and not the ugly clones we are getting used to.
  • TheWrit - Wednesday, October 31, 2018 - link

These people - the people who make phones need to take their head out of their asses and take some queues from their own markets, and the markets of their competitors: from the smartphone sector. Specifically Casio and TicWatch. They "ALSO" have two displays, but they are on TOP of one another. Greyscale and full color. Why is this good? Because who the FUCK needs color to do most things on ther phones? Not many - but it's nice ot have when playing games, MAYBE surfing th e web sht checking out video and photos. Otherwise, MOST of the time, we're reading texts, goofing off on social media or just plain wasting time on wasteful games. This is where the low power low battery consumption screen comes in. With something like this in place, phones could last up to a week or more. What else? One could assign a screen personality to each app so the phone would know which screen to use depending ON the app. What does this translate to? I'm a genius, that's what.
  • Alistair - Wednesday, October 31, 2018 - link

Wow what a fantastic surprise. I thought this was a good idea 5 years ago, and someone finally made it now the tech has caught up. Hope Anandtech can review this one!
  • shabby - Wednesday, October 31, 2018 - link

Leave to the chinese phone manufacturers to push the envelope further, kudos to them.
  • Dragonstongue - Wednesday, October 31, 2018 - link

cool, but yet again IMO battery size is "not that good" considering two screens to power (quite high combined resolution) and the CPU wise while not "top of the class" still is a higher powered one.

I always thought would be really cool if a phone maker would use 18650 battery style, sure it would be a bit thicker and heavier (no doubt) but capacity would be much much much better then nearly all phones AND can easily "swap batteries" if needed...phones all eventually "die" or need upgrading, but why do they always put out new batteries all the damn time, use a "standard" battery and make different phones from there..cheesh
  • Diji1 - Friday, November 2, 2018 - link

A phone that is thicker than AA (18650) batteries would look prehistoric.
  • 10basetom - Wednesday, October 31, 2018 - link

The back reminds me of the YotaPhone 2, except it's OLED instead of e-ink.
  • wr3zzz - Wednesday, October 31, 2018 - link

I would like to see the battery test. It is the single biggest reason that other brands hadn't tried to commercially launch this kind of phone. Trust me that the engineers at every phone company worth its salt has had thought of it.

The Graphene-as-heat-spreader part is completely BS.
Graphene is only 20 times more heat conductive *at best* compared to copper, yet it is 1,000,000 times thinner than a 0.1 mm copper sheet. Since for it to work as heat *spreader* and spread heat horizontally, the thermal conductance is proportional to the thickness of the sheet, as such a basic 0.1mm copper sheet is about 50,000 times *more* effective as heat spreader than graphene.
    Ugh. Stupid PR department.
  • shabby - Wednesday, October 31, 2018 - link

The pr department is just trying to make itself relevant, you'd do the same if your job was on the line basically.
  • ddaniel91 - Thursday, November 1, 2018 - link

Genuinly curious, what prevents them from using multiple layers of graphene for transporting the heat? While I know that graphene itself is thin, they surely could use it stacked in some way and get better performance than copper?
  • Hereiam2005 - Thursday, November 1, 2018 - link

Graphene only exhibit exotic properties if it is only several layers thin, from under 1 to 10 nm (dependent on the exact properties). Stacking too many layers will turn graphene into graphite.

Or you could alternate between thin graphene and other insulating layers, which, other than the exorbitant price, kills the heat spreading performance because of the poor heat conductance of the insulating layers.

Depositing graphene on conductive materials will also kill its exotic properties because of the free electrons floating around.

Graphene sure is a wonderful material, but using it as a heat spreader is like using the Big Falcon Rocket as your dining fork.

In other words, don't do it.

A Really interesting Phone, if it is Apple or Samsung it will be the biggest trend ever in a smartphone industry :)
  • MamiyaOtaru - Thursday, November 1, 2018 - link

I don't actually consider a full body screen as a compelling selling point, but I really like their implementation of it. Being able to dedicate all your camera hardware to one camera seems nice, and I rather like the idea of making your own rear case design from any arbitrary image. If I'm going to be stuck with glass on the back of a phone might as well have a reason for it
  • Eletriarnation - Thursday, November 1, 2018 - link

Is the lower end model equipped with 4GB or 6GB of RAM? The article text initially says 4GB but then the chart and the pricing comment at the end refer to 6GB.
  • imaheadcase - Thursday, November 1, 2018 - link

I'm not sure why people are praising the two sided screens. I actually got to use a prototype of this type of phone earlier this year, and the problem is what you would expect, you will end up pressing wrong icons on the screen because the OS has problems with dual screen on a custom UI.
  • sonny73n - Friday, November 2, 2018 - link

“I actually got to use a prototype of this type of phone earlier this year”

BS. You did not use a prototype of THIS phone. Even if you had your hands on something similar (which I don’t think you did), you would be the one who couldn’t press the right icons.
  • Ro_Ja - Thursday, November 1, 2018 - link

    Thiz phone is very interesting.
  • unrulycow - Friday, November 2, 2018 - link

I really like the idea behind this. It wouldn't work for me though, since I have 2 small children and cannot have a phone without a case.
  • sonny73n - Friday, November 2, 2018 - link

“A smartphone with no selfie camera”?

Does a selfie camera have to be low-res? Or one with a display on the same side? Duh!
