Yes, owning an actual development device helps with enthusiasm.
  • Maethorr - Friday, April 29, 2011 - link

Well, I actually prefer to test on older live devices or on the pc for most things but there are two applications I think you could do with something like this.

one thing would be a mobile media server, especially as these devices get more and more memory how cool would it be to have a phone sized media/file server. The other thing I think that I would like to work on is an idea I had is for a decent vpn software for a phone, and if this could connect to a monitor with the touchscreen working as a trackpad I think you could have a decent remote access system

  • vtohthree - Wednesday, April 27, 2011 - link

I could/would do a number of things, as in, it could go a couple ways.

1.) I'd work with some uprising developers at the local department

2.) If I get hired at the software firm I'm applying to, I'm sure there are android developers there.

3.) Pull out some elbow grease, get my IDE fired up and play around to see what I can do it with it.

I've been hoping to play around with the mobile Firefox source; mobile Firefox requires Android.
  • dochood - Wednesday, April 27, 2011 - link

I am going to start programming on Android this summer. I like that Java can be used on everything from a phone to a mainframe, and everything in between.

I've developed executables on Linux, dropped them on Windows 7 and HPUX (yuck!), and they ran fine without recompilation.

I remember people scoffing at write-once, run anywhere a few years ago.
  • scook9 - Wednesday, April 27, 2011 - link

If I won this thing I would actually start experimenting with making my own ROMs instead of seeing what everyone else on the web has made. This would be the ultimate testbed for a developer!
  • WhiteGryphon - Wednesday, April 27, 2011 - link

I've always wanted to do the same, but for some reason my boss didn't want me experimenting on my work phone, lol.
  • rmmeli - Wednesday, April 27, 2011 - link

  • alexb1187 - Wednesday, April 27, 2011 - link

I am a web developer and application programmer, and would love to start getting into mobile app development. I think the android platform is the best from a developer standpoint (I'm not looking to make money, just create useful tools, so Apple's model doesn't really work for me). I think this bit of hardware would really let me make some really awesome apps and make sure they are future proof. My original droid will take care of the legacy aspect. Thanks, and pick me!
  • eldaveo - Wednesday, April 27, 2011 - link

If I got this phone, it will be my first smartphone. I will be using the heck out of it ofc. Will also find a good android project to participate in since I had played around a bit with developing android applications using the emulator.

  • Shelnutt2 - Wednesday, April 27, 2011 - link

I've been toying with the idea of trying to start a port of libreoffice to android. I know it will need a complete new UI, but I feel like we really need a good office suite on android. Sure there are paid versions, but they have drawbacks like in the Asus review it didn't even have autosave.

My main reason I haven't worked my idea more is that my HTC Hero isn't the best platform to work with. It's create, and I'm running cm7 on it, but if I had a more modern device, such as this I could really start the ball rolling on this.
  • wolrah - Wednesday, April 27, 2011 - link

Since the Android Emulator is painfully slow, this would finally give me a development platform where I didn't have to care what I tried, a wipe and reinstall can be done without pain. This is in comparison to my current tactic of using my Evo as a dev platform where I basically have to resist doing anything when on business trips for fear of borking my phone when I might need it.

  • yuriylsh - Wednesday, April 27, 2011 - link

I'm waiting for my current contract to expire at the end of the year so I can get my hands on WP7 and do my development using real phone and not just an emulator. But this MDP can shift my development intentions to Android platform as I've been thinking about doing some programming outside of Microsoft's world to explore other areas for awhile now, just did not get a real opportuniy for that. This might be it.
  • Uritziel - Wednesday, April 27, 2011 - link

  • Vepsa - Wednesday, April 27, 2011 - link

I've been working through an Android development text book in my spare time.
  • Wiggy McShades - Wednesday, April 27, 2011 - link

I've been working (with one other person), for the past 8 months, on application that can optimize your commute using your local public transit systems and roadways. We do an analysis in the cloud on the data collected from the user's device to make predictions on your arrival time, what routes you should take, and a heads up about traffic on the routes you travel on frequently. Unfortunately computing in the cloud is expensive and so we've looked into doing the data analysis on the actual device. The issue with this is the performance and power draw of the calculations being done. This dev kit not only would allow me to prototype a multithreaded version of our software, but also help to optomize our code using the platforms advanced power measurement circuitry to see if we're getting any real world gains from our optimizations. The software should see large gains from a second processing core and this would be the perfect dev platform to test that with.

I develop small applications from utilities to games, but I've always been tethered to typical x86 platforms (Windows, Linux) because I can't really afford to purchase those nifty new devices.
I'm dreaming of being able to deploy a couple of things on this platform (porting) and to learn how to make use of the new medium. It is very different from a PC, and it's certainly a major market I would love to put my work into.

I have done mobile web development on iOS for my employer, tweaking pages so that they load and function correctly. Currently our mobile standard is either blackberry or iphone. I have been trying to convince them to check out the android platform because of the OS's extreme flexibility. This would give me the chance to show management what android can do and give me a chance to learn how to develop for android.

I also would love to have the phone for personal reasons. I am into emulators and because of the power of this platform it would allow me to test, develop and port emulators from other platforms to android.

I would donate the device to the Society of Computer Engineering (SCE) club at my university (SJSU), where many of my friends are engineers and work on mobile apps and stuff.

I would offer it up as a "rentable" device, so that nobody can take it home, and it can only be used in the context of development as an educational tool.

I'd rather see what several smart minds come up with instead of using it myself (one mind, one input).

Not trying to get all Mother Teresa, either. I've seen how quickly those guys come up with stuff.

Not impossible--Xen is already on ARM, and the nextgen snapdragon systems should be powerful enough to support desktop features on a bigger display safely.

I'm a computer science minor in college and I'm going to med school next year. I have always loved computers and programming. I have been meaning to enter the world of mobile programming and I have a few ideas that I think could be revolutionary. I'd rather not divulge them here because I'm afraid they may be taken but I think this would be a great opportunity for me to enter the world of mobile programming and get my hands dirty with this new dual core SoC. I have significant experience in C/C++ and Java and I think I will be capable of putting together some great mobile applications.

I'm a developer on the Dolphin Gamecube/Wii/Triforce emulator, as most should know, Dolphin can run most Gamecube and Wii games full speed on a decently powerful PC. I have been working for a while now making Dolphin work on systems that aren't x86/x86_64 based. My recent work includes removing the Nvidia CG dependency in Dolphin(Because Nvidia doesn't support Android the best when it comes to Nvidia CG.) Also I've worked on the core of Dolphin to make the Interpreter core work on ARM virtual machines.

If I had this device, I would continue my port of Dolphin over to Android devices, and write a native recompiler core for Dolphin for ARM based Android devices, such as this one.

I work for a company that specializes in digital medical forms records. The doctors I work with love their iPads, and we've been spending quite some time developing for iOS at their request.

A chance to explore development for and/or port our work over to Android would open up a sea of possibilities, as there are far more Android-based smart phones among our clientele than there are iPads. Because of this, I believe we'd see far greater return on time invested developing for the Android platform than we do developing for iOS.

I start my PhD in the fall focusing on ubiquitous computing devices in healthcare/wellness/fitness. A huge focus is on mobile computing with sensor data. I would love to have this development platform for rapid prototyping of my research projects. One of the biggest letdowns of current phones is lack of USB host. This development platform clearly has USB host as well as openness for plugging new devices into it. I wish it had NFC, but that is for on-the-side personal projects ;) Lack of cellular connection isn't a huge problem with USB host - just pop in a 3G/4G usb dongle!

The 5 microphones are certainly interesting and I would like to explore new ways to utilize them. The large camera sensor would benefit some of my planned research projects with exergaming and other computer vision ideas. I am definitely looking forward to the dual core CPU and more powerful GPU to power the exergaming projects.

Surely developing games is nice; it shows us what we can do, attracts audience, and pay the bills. However, we can do far more with these new technologies. Those are my hopes for the contest :)

I am a graduate student in Computer Science at Purdue, focusing on information security. I have done some work in the past on using cell phones for user authentication and providing services, especially in the healthcare domain.

However, my research group quickly ran into difficulties because the phone was not powerful enough (several years ago) and had unintuitive user interfaces (it was an old Nokia brick phone).

It would be interesting to reopen this research with more modern technology that included higher performance and better user interfaces.

I've been waiting patiently to upgrade to an Android phone for some time now, so this Qualcomm powerhouse would be so sweet. I'd probably also use it as a mobile HTPC frequently to output 1080p. :)

I've been developing an app that has all the tools to let people play "tabletop" RPGs on their phones with other people, remotely. It has a map builder, and the game field has a map viewer, dice roller, character sheet view/edit, character/monster token movement, and a chatbox. The idea is to have all the tools necessary, but let the players still control the mechanics themselves, not enforcing any specific rules. This way you still get the tabletop experience. I'd like to use this MDP to help develop this for the Snapdragon.

To augment my private investigations services, I am creating a home monitoring system that combines typical home monitoring services (security, fire, power) with mobile video/audio, real time data and mobile alerts. I will have a very small tablet (~4" screen) as the base home unit that coordinates its own functions (security/fire detection, alarms, video, ect.), the alarm company service, and the mobile services. For this unit, I applied for the Nvidia Tegra 2 development platform and was told I didn't have a long enough history of sales and didn't meet the the required volume potential to qualify. Crap.

I have been looking at the MSM8660 Mobile Development Platform as my second option. I could certainly put it to good use!

And having it free would certainly help speed up my development!

I am an Electrical Engineering student at Georgia Tech, and for my sophomore design project in my computer science class (basically a yearly thesis for engineers) I am developing an android application that will increase the security of the phone. This is important to not only the average user, but also to companies supplying their employees with devices. Unfortunately, I am currently only coding for a device simulator because all the android handsets available to me lack some of the key features the app will utilize.

I'm an Electrical Engineering undergrad. Lately I've been working on a senior design project involving sensor fusion technology, merging accelerometer and gyroscope data collected on wireless microcontroller platforms. Right now the central control is done from Matlab for fast prototyping and integration with a sensior fusion toolkit that's already been developed. However the end goal is to port the algorithms to a mobile device with Bluetooth such that a user can wear several of these sensor platforms around the body and receive and process the data on either a smartphone or tablet device in real time. This Qualcomm development kit could be used for these purposes.

If I won this MDP I would donate it to my university so they could educate up and coming students about current technologies and programming.

    Very interesting phone
  • Exirtis - Friday, April 29, 2011 - link

I'd love to play around with this a bit since I don't currently have a smartphone (still rockin' a 5 year old handset), but there's the distinct possibility that I might try my hand at developing something if I got this. Even if I didn't, I have friends who almost certainly would—given access to a dev kit such as this.

I want to win for the cool Pelican cases alone. :) But seriously I would use this to kick start some app development and between a 13 MP camera and 5 microphones, let alone the 1.5ghz Snapdragon I would have some very cool hardware resources to try and leverage. Good luck all.

If I won the Qualcomm MSM8660 Mobile Development kit I would spend my time working on free apps. I never understood why people try to get rich on mobile games. Thanks for the chances to win this awesome prize!

Start up my own Android development group with some friends from college. I'm the only one with an Android phone at the moment and my original Motorola Droid is a bit aged to develop on anymore. It'd be a blast!

    Dear Anandtech,

I ask for this device very humbly. I am not a dedicated developer program-wise, but work with advanced internal computer hardware on a daily basis. I've been stuck with a PoS Dell Axim X30 for a few years now, and I would LOVE to get a better platform t o work with. I am also an active beta tester of a CR-48.

    Sincerely, Spynoodle, spynoodlets.blogspot.com

P.S. Your site owns! So does this kit!

Or somthing like that, Obi said...And an oportunity to go from using the apps, to creating them, without just thinking about doing it!

The idea of making apps for mobile devices sounds like a wonderful transition back to civilian life! I can't wait.
  • hayden0103 - Friday, April 29, 2011 - link

I'd love to start up a two-man dev gig with a buddy of mine. He has a Droid 2 but it's much too locked down for developing.

I would use this to test & build apps in .NET/C# using MonoDroid (http://mono-android.net/)

Very good idea....this is the fastest dev platform...this will be great....:D

As being a student i dont have the money to buy a high end android device for testing....:D

So getting this will be great

I would use it as my mobile communication device (who needs cellular radio when WiFi is everywhere I care to use it?) and to learn more about developing on the Android platform, which is especially helpful as a preview of newer devices to come.

Working on a tool that would allow businesses to us QR codes and bar codes to allow customers a chance to give feedback. Now most places ask you to call an 800 number or go to their website to take a survey.

I would use the larger case as the most bad-a$$ lunchbox ever and be the envy of all my coworkers as I pull out a sandwich from the depths of the monstrous bin and my dessert jell-o would obviously be nested inside the smaller case for enhanced protection... the MDP itself? Well I guess I would learn how to develop for android on it
  • shawngmc - Sunday, May 1, 2011 - link

... I'd make some Android apps. My only droid device for a long time was my phone, and I can't afford to kill that. I've got a nice Viewsonic G-tab now, but the screen size difference makes it a pain to tell what would work well on a phone-size screen.
  • schainan - Sunday, May 1, 2011 - link

    I'd really love this.
  • wiking - Sunday, May 1, 2011 - link

This would be a wonderful development tool. Intend to apply this for Android apps that serve visual effects and animation filmmakers.
  • Highlyaniamted - Sunday, May 1, 2011 - link

As a really expensive paperweight, or perhaps motivation to dabble in development.
  • wbynum - Monday, May 2, 2011 - link

I wouldn't know what to do with this if I won. I'd probably sell it and keep the cases, they're sweet!
  • tutech - Monday, May 2, 2011 - link

I'd love to learn more about developing on the cutting edge of Snapdragon-powered Android! Can't wait to put this through its paces!
  • Ophan - Monday, May 2, 2011 - link

I'd finally be able to to start developing android applications without waiting for the emulator to launch (sometimes longer than it takes to edit my code and re-compile!).
  • digitalzombie - Tuesday, May 3, 2011 - link

Never hear of Adreno GPU. At least someone jump in the mobile GPU fray other than nVidia. Especially what they replace with their last class action lawsuit against faulty gpu, I'm glad there is an alternative.

I would be absolutely pumped to get my hands on the dev platform. I work on a number of Flash and native mobile projects (primarily iOS but some Android) for my job and in my free time work on trying to make flash apps that run well on both desktop machines and Android devices. The single core Snapdragons are pretty hard to get smooth with even a moderate amount of load... I checked out a Xoom recently and was very impressed with the flash performance and expect that the new platform here could have just enough punch to make the magic happen.

I would use this device to build the next amazing android app.. something that given the power of the snapdragon would have the tegra running and hiding..
  • distortnx - Thursday, May 5, 2011 - link

I'd give it to my dad since he's the one actually doing the development.
