-1. Fastest and smoothest OS around. Worth it for that and Storage Spaces alone. Win 7 feels like Vista in comparison.

-1. works for Microsoft. taking crack and thinks the reality distortion field works on normal humans.
  • B3an - Thursday, August 2, 2012 - link

Yeah everyone who likes Win 8 works for MS.

Get a life Belard. Always posting your pointless crap on MS news because you have nothing better to do with your time. Pathetic loser.
  • Belard - Friday, August 3, 2012 - link

Awww... I'm so hurt. Hmmm, you didn't deny it. Saying that it makes Win7 feel like Vista, that is something nobody has ever said. Win7 worked out of the box, did a lot of neat little UI improvements over XP (Vista did nothing different, the UI looked different but behaved the same as XP)

Pointless? Funny, quite a lot of people think / say / feel / know that Windows8 is garbage. I've yet to meet a person in real-life that actually liked Windows8. We'll know in a few months how the masses take to it, huh?

Throwing an insult because I don't like what you like? I thought this was a semi-free country.
  • damianrobertjones - Friday, August 3, 2012 - link

it's been shown that quite a few posters haven't even fired up Windows 8 yet have a lot to say
  • heffeque - Friday, August 3, 2012 - link

Just wanted to say that the final version of Windows 8 Enterprise N is out in the wild.
There's info about it in MDL.
  • damianrobertjones - Monday, August 6, 2012 - link

I've managed to grab the version with WMP :) It's fast!
  • crispbp04 - Friday, August 3, 2012 - link

You come across like a freaking moron. Talking about "reality distortion fields" and "taking crack". I'm not sure what the term taking crack means, I'm assuming that you mean smoking crack?

In regards to your criticism, what are your qualifications exactly? Are you a developer? Business analyst? My guess is a talentless geek squad quality IT guy. Maybe an apple "genius" since everyone in "real life" that you've met have an opinion on an operating system that hasn't even launched yet. Let's hear it.
  • augiem - Saturday, August 4, 2012 - link

Funny, I use Vista 64 on my main machine and Windows 7 on my secondary and both work just great, are stable, and fast. Granted both have annoyances compared to XP but I've tried my best to plug those holes with 3rd party software.

Making Windows 7 feel like Vista is not an insult.

Using Windows 8 on a desktop feels like I'm using a prototype meant to be released 2-3 years from now, not 2-3 months. So many aspects of the new UI were not thought through well at all.
  • tipoo - Thursday, August 2, 2012 - link

There are a huge amount of strides forward in Windows 8, it's just the swapping between Metro and Explorer that bugs me, and as apps get written specifically for one or the other that will get worse.
  • damianrobertjones - Friday, August 3, 2012 - link

It's pretty much just like changing from Word to Excel. Not exactly a pain
  • augiem - Saturday, August 4, 2012 - link

Multitasking between Metro apps and Metro and the desktop is terribly awkward and slow.
  • augiem - Saturday, August 4, 2012 - link

meant to say multitasking between Metro apps and Metro apps or Metro Apps and desktop apps is awkward and slow.
  • KoolAidMan1 - Monday, August 6, 2012 - link

Windows Explorer is also worse than before, that's what bothers me the most. Instead of tightening things up like the awful preference panes and control panel, they oversimplify with Metro and further complicate by adding a GD ribbon to Explorer.

    Idiotic
  • KoolAidMan1 - Monday, August 6, 2012 - link

I haven't seen anything in Windows 8 that makes me feel like I'd be missing out if I stay with Windows 7. I think I'll wait for Windows 9 to roll out before I upgrade my OS.

Windows 8 is shaping up to be a repeat of the Vista debacle, in my opinion.
  • Belard - Thursday, August 2, 2012 - link

It'll make Vista look like a speed bump. LOL!

Waiting for glorious failure of this garbage.
  • SlyNine - Thursday, August 2, 2012 - link

Sad thing is, by listing to the users that don't like it. They could satisfy both by changing 2 things, little things all in all. Why are they trying to shove this down our throats.
  • damianrobertjones - Thursday, August 2, 2012 - link

They're not... you can still buy Windows 7
  • zhadum - Thursday, August 2, 2012 - link

For how long? We don't know yet how long manufacturers will be allowed to sell new systems with Windows 7.
  • Belard - Friday, August 3, 2012 - link

    LOL Don't COUNT ON IT!

    A) MS ripped out the Start button/menu on WIn8... It really should have been an option. After all, you are only a few clicks from making Windows7 look like Windows 2000.

    B) When Win7 hit the market, vista was gone... I think it ended up being buried next to some ET games.

    C) MS wants to rape us with Windows 8, there are no options. Only if people are screaming and doing returns and demanding Win7 would we see Win7 continue.

Even during most of the Vista era, only a few select OEMs (ThinkPad) offered XP... but of course, we could still buy XP OEM.

So, if there is NO Windows7 for the common folks to buy... then what is a person supposed to do? Linux... here is another chance.
  • damianrobertjones - Thursday, August 2, 2012 - link

    What if it doesn't fail?
  • Belard - Friday, August 3, 2012 - link

It could happen.... Yep, people could be falling in love with it. Some of us could be wrong. I'm betting... it'll be hated and MS will release SP1 within 3 months with a FIX to make it all better.
  • damianrobertjones - Thursday, August 2, 2012 - link

Hardly... This time machines will be sold with, at least, 2Gb ram so we won't suffer the same Vista/Superfectch 'consumers have no idea what they're doing' thing.

P.s. I see a load of things in Windows 8 that'll make me change... it's new and fresh for a start and that's good enough for me and it's DAMN easy to use with a mouse on the desktop
  • ananduser - Thursday, August 2, 2012 - link

...are the ones that can't seem to realize that Win8 has 2 GUIs separated by 1 click.
...are the ones that think that by the time W9 hits(when they will upgrade) they'll have xerox parc GUI exclusively.
...are the ones that whine so that they have something to whine.
  • maximumGPU - Thursday, August 2, 2012 - link

    Agreed.
Some people might have genuine reasons not to like Win8, but all i hear and read again and again is metro this metro that, when desktop is just a click away. It's getting old real fast.
No one ever bothers to talk about all the other improvments Win 8 will be bringing.
Guess it's the same whenever something new and fresh comes along, some can't fathom the idea of changing their beloved habits, even for something that could potentially be better.
Wait until you've spent more time with Win 8 before jumping on your keyboards and whining.
  • Spunjji - Friday, August 3, 2012 - link

Double-agreed. tired of the whining now. Too many self-entitled "experts" out there who are pissed off that the world is changing around them.
  • Belard - Friday, August 3, 2012 - link

There is a lot to like about Windows8. A lot of little improvements that makes it a worthy replacement of windows7. But yeah, metro being bolted makes it worthless. I wouldn't spend $1 to buy Win8.

So what if YOU don't agree with others, what makes your OPINION on it more valid than mine or others? Did you or anyone see any such posts about Windows7? Win7 was so nice and stable, I installed the RC version on all my computers.

And by all means, I think MS did a great job on Ribbon, I'm okay with Ribbon Explorer. Some good and bad things about explorer, but mostly good (nothing to do with ribbon).

Metro for the desktop isn't good. Its new, its different, I'm open to change. I use iOS, Android, metro on my phone... they work. Metro on a desktop? ugh. Its sloppy, its ugly. They metro-ized the Desktop so it looks like Windows7 Basic.

    Microsoft has gone "full retard".

Win8 metro adds NOTHING to the user experience. Its a big-ass launcher start-menu sucking up the screen, nothing more. If you are in desktop, then the live tiles are rather useless, eh? Since metro can't be seen from the desktop, its useless. Metro apps are full-screen, which also renders the Start Screen useless. MS killed of gadgets over a lame excuse (yes security - but why fix it when you can kill it). Touch screen desktops are not efficient. Ask anyone who has a touch-screen AIO and how much they use it. Most, if not all go back to the normal M&K after a while.

You can't customize or rename things on the Start Screen. Imagine the fun of trying to fix a metro issue, but since the solution is on a full screen or desktop - it makes it hard to see, no?

The task switcher / app management. Like pressing the red X button was so hard? Metro task-manager doesn't show desktop programs (exactly) and the Taskbar doesn't show metro Apps.

MS promotes their new Win8 Keyboard with Win8 shortcuts (I thought this was supposed to be an easy touch UI?) So to use it, its a touch, keyboard and mouse UI all at the same time? The charms suck... they pop out when not needed, and sometimes don't when you don't need it or some program does it for you.

When you LOG into your Win8 PC, you are pretty much logging in to Microsoft. Most of those Metro Apps requires you to be logged in.

Metro photos / videos / Music players shovel their wares more than your own stuff. These players are very sub-standard to Android, iOS.

I have Windows8 on a computer... its blows. yes, it installed quickly without problems. Its a bit slick and Metro has its cool "Thats new / neat" moments.

But at the end of the day, MS has bolted on a mobile-device UI onto a desktop OS. Remember UT3? A modern game from 2008 - it bombed. The Menu UI was console and sucked. The crappy maps didn't help.

Keep this in mind. Since Apple OS X has been on the market (2001) it hasn't really changed... its skin has been updated bit by bit over the years, but it works the same today as it did then. Windows has changed 4 times. (98 > XP > Vista/W7 > W8). Apple doesn't need to overhaul the UI.

Lets look at Canon digital Cameras. I've bought and recommend these. The UI has NOT changed sine 2000 when I bought my first camera. The skin has improved/modernized - but menu is the same. From the $90 model to the $500 one. Nikon, Sony, Kodak, etc have changed theirs quite a bit. They could have 7 models at a store right now, and you'd have 2-3 different GUIs. Canon designed it easy and logical the first time and hasn't changed since.

I give Microsoft points for trying to advance the GUI... by all means, I'm for improvements. I would love to have something better than the Start Menu. But you know what? The Start Menu is pretty much the same as a normal status bar of Mac / Linux / Amiga. Its just they stuck all the menus into a button - mostly to keep Apple off their ass.

I do expect that how we use computers 10~15+ years from now will be different... I hope so. But it has to be done right. Windows8 is not it.

PS: I'm also for MS killing Windows all together, no more legacy code some day. And who knows what the future will be? Something like Metro / iOS / Android is all MOST people need to interact with a computer. As long as you can run some apps, games and a browser - you have everything you need.
  • eddman - Thursday, August 2, 2012 - link

I'm sick and tired of reading these useless comments. If you don't have anything to say then shut it and keep it to yourselves. I don't particularly like win 8 either, but it doesn't mean I should troll on every single win 8 related article. You disgust me.

Windows 8 might seem odd on a non-touch computer, but it's perfect for a tablet. I'll probably keep using 7 on my desktop for a while, but really looking forward to buy a win 8 tablet, specially MS' surface.

  • HisDivineOrder - Thursday, August 2, 2012 - link

Soon? Please? Hopefully? MS OS releases lately are like Star Trek movies. Staggered releases of greatness refined from crapness.
  • jardows2 - Thursday, August 2, 2012 - link

I'm looking forward to the Windows 8 and Metro UI. Unfortunately the preview release crashed on startup, and I was never able to try it out. Metro reminds me a touch of Windows 3.1 interface, which I have always felt was superior for usability than the Win9x interface. For $40, I can certainly try an upgrade from XP pro!
  • Belard - Friday, August 3, 2012 - link

    You're joking?

Windows3 wasn't even an operating System. It was always garbage, a joke. 8.3 file names? PS: for fun, I tried to install Win98 on a new i5-3570 computer... no luck. :)

Win8 RP 8440 worked smooth for me. Still can't stand it, thou.
  • Exodite - Friday, August 3, 2012 - link

To be fair the current version of windows is still stuck with ridiculous and counter-intuitive 8.3 file names.

Sure, it /could/ use longer and more intuitive file names and have been able to for some time. That doesn't really matter much when it doesn't take advantage of the fact though.
  • Moizy - Thursday, August 2, 2012 - link

Most of the complaints I hear revolve around the look of the interface, and the loss of the start button. When MS released Office 2007, the forums burned about the ribbon, and the loss of the text-based menu bar. Recently I had to do some work on an older machine with Excel 03, and it was terrible. The new interface is much better, and those complaints didn't even address the significant performance and capability improvements that version of Office brought to the table.

This scenario seems familiar, a lot of complaints about look and change, ignoring performance and usage advancements. Remember, Vista was hated because it caused issues and was a resource hog. That comparison doesn't work because this OS seems to work fine, and very efficiently at that, all while unifying the kernel for tablets, PCs, and phones, a significant advantage. It just looks different and changes the usage paradigm, so let's get out the pitchforks and descend on Redmond! Geez
  • Belard - Friday, August 3, 2012 - link

Office 95~2003 looks pretty much the same. Why they did the ribbon makes sense. With Office 2010 and patches, you can collapse the ribbon. They also cleaned it up and made it better. I still use office 2003 because it does everything I need... but for $125 or so, Office 2010 Home edition is an excellent deal.

Vista has a lot of bugs... didn't shut down, wouldn't wake up, graphic drivers, memory flaws. Win7 fixed most of those, Win8 improves on top of that. Then they bolted metro and made it ugly.

What MS is trying to do, makes sense... there are advantages. I don't see it working in the real world.

Office Ribbon was design to get people to do more and make it easy. Metro doesn't do anything. They HID the start button (its still there), so now you have a START Screen that does pretty much everything the Start menu did.

Read my above comment about MacOS-X / Canon.
  • Exodite - Friday, August 3, 2012 - link

Personally I'm quite excited for the minor tweaks and performance advances of W8, though I'll reserve judgment until I see whether or not that result in actual performance gain in applications.

That said I'll give W8 a miss because no amount of minor technical advances is worth a completely unusable UI.

I'm not going to make a big deal about it, since a lot of people seem unable to handle differing opinions, but W7 is good enough for me.
  • Belard - Friday, August 3, 2012 - link

Windows XP shows what happens when things stagnate. They should go back to real version numbers like the old days. Because XP-MCE lookd a bit different, had some extra features to be called XP .2 - something. Not just service pack versions which is a really stupid way of saying "Windows 7.1" Or that its rumored that the "Metro" name for Metro is being thrown out and replaced with "Windows 8 User Interface" - wow, that sounds... dorky. Why not call Windows (Which in of itself, also stupid) "Microsoft Graphics User Interface Operating System 8" and dump the "windows" name? MS-GUIOS8 has a nicer ring to it?

Releasing a OS standard every 2~3 years is healthy, it improves technology and keeps developers on their toes. Not becoming lazy as they did with MS-DOS or XP. Remember when it used to Windows95 / 98? But rather than Windows99, they called it "98se" - lame. Give it a number, it comes out when its ready.

Windows7 is quite good that it could be used for the next 7~8 years, like XP. But hopefully it will be dead in that time frame.

What happens when Windows hits version 10? Do they get sued by Apple?
  • Metaluna - Friday, August 3, 2012 - link

As long as they don't use roman numerals, which Apple invented, for the version number, Windows 10 should be fine :).

    - 1. Metro-ish start menu looks totally gay. What's with the rainbow colors? I feel like I just smoked a large amount of grass when looking at that...
    - 2. Once open, there's no simple way of closing "apps". Going to a corner to reopen the Start leaves them running. Please don't point me to the stupid "drag to close" method, it's a pain to use.
    - 3. x64 version using over 1.2 gig of Ram fresh out of the box? Wow ! What will happen after 1 year of installing applications, changes, leftovers? Needing 4 gig just to boot?
    - 4. Constant switching between desktop and Start is very annoying
    - 5. MONSTER full-screen stuff with huge text and mega-buttons. Did MS try this on a larger 27" monitor ? It looks simply horrible !
    - 6. Desktop mode looks much worst than Win7/Vista, like a step backward in looks.... also washed out colors, no contrast at all, no more nice shadows.
    - 7. Lots of stuff hidden between complicated menus and large amounts of clicking to get somewhere and do something.
    - 8. What's with the "Microsoft Account" thing in the latest version which you are forced to input at install time? Do I need to be online and have a MS e-mail to use my computer? WTF??

Try showing this to the following two categories of people:
    - People who have used windows before, but never used a smartphone/tablet
    - People who never used any kind of computer system (these guys will probably get stuck before the login screen, unable to even put in their password)
You'll notice they will get stuck at the most basic operations... it's just horrible !
The geeks will find out how to do stuff, or search the net/forums... but the rest (99%) of people? The frustration will reach the stars...

Just wait to see the returns to stores of new PC's with Win8, after they noticed they aren't able to do anything with their computers (stuck before the Login screen), thinking that it's broken...

    Getting the popcorn :)
