This is a worthless card for gamers.

inb4: BUT IT IS NOT FOR GAMING.

Well, read their blog. They are selling it like a gaming card. Their CEO merely tailor-made the presentation on GTC to fit the crowd. On their blog it says it is "engineered for gaming".

Nvidia is beating new records of greed.
  • nathanddrews - Tuesday, March 25, 2014 - link

"Greed" is a word thrown around too lightly. People said the same thing about Titan v1.0, but people still flocked to buy SLI Titan setups. The Titan Z will likely be just as successful.
  • chaosbloodterfly - Tuesday, March 25, 2014 - link

Pretty much. It's a corporation's job to maximize profit. Do people think nVidia makes cards for charity or something?
  • Nagorak - Tuesday, March 25, 2014 - link

I'm not sure the word "flocked" is appropriate. Even if more people bought Titan than expected, it's still a very, very miniscule amount of people out of the entire group of graphics card purchasers.
  • nathanddrews - Wednesday, March 26, 2014 - link

OK then, the niche market flocked to it... which is true of every high-end product. The sales were strong enough to justify Titan Black and now Titan Z at even higher price points. If I had a mITX setup and 3K to throw around, I would already have a Titan Z preorder.
  • ddriver - Saturday, March 29, 2014 - link

And now, a limited time offer, you can get TWO titans at the price of THREE!
  • WithoutWeakness - Tuesday, March 25, 2014 - link

It's a halo product, just as the first Titan was a halo product. People will buy it. There are people who have a virtually unlimited budget for their computers and they will buy this card. I would buy a Titan Z if $3K was a drop in the bucket to me; in fact I would buy two of them. The card being $3K is a little absurd but they're straddling the line between making as much as they can selling gamers a GeForce card while avoiding undercutting their Tesla compute card sales.

This is also Kepler's last hurrah as the fastest desktop card before Maxwell rolls out. Nvidia is milking 28nm Kepler for everything they can because it's cheaper to manufacture than 20nm Maxwell. If they can charge top dollar for GPUs and still have people buy them then they will continue to do so. They ARE a company after all and their primary concern is increasing profit and share price.
  • beck2050 - Wednesday, March 26, 2014 - link

Exactly right. Its a halo product for people with bucks, and their plenty of those around. Reading the hate mail is just sour grapes, It's like sniveling about how expensive a Ferrari is because a Chevy Nova will get you there just as well.
  • Yojimbo - Tuesday, March 25, 2014 - link

"greed"? give me a break. if you think it's overpriced don't buy it.
  • tim851 - Thursday, March 27, 2014 - link

    This.
nVidia had a net income of 500-something million dollars last year. Or as Apple calls it: a bad week.
    But yeah, so greedy.
  • Sabresiberian - Friday, March 28, 2014 - link

You are clearly not a gamer at all, much less one that runs a 2560x1440 screen at 120 Hz or multiple monitors, or both.
  • layosh - Friday, March 28, 2014 - link

    Greedy?
No, you are wrong, think big: for 6-9 K$, you can have a true supercomputer that otherwise costs 5 million. Who is the greedy one here?
Of course, this is a valid argument for you only If you need one.
I do and this offer makes me happy. My palms are already sweaty :-)
  • pikunsia - Monday, May 19, 2014 - link

    <This is a worthless card for gamers.>
Absolutely! And I'm wondering what will happen with the professional cards Quadro and Tesla? Expend $ 3,000 for a GPU is really insanity! In the next future we'll see heavier applications, but for that time 20nm fab GPUs already will be released for 1/3 of that price, and then you'll regret it!
  • Friendly0Fire - Tuesday, March 25, 2014 - link

I think the comparison is quite apt: this is this generation's ARES. Ridiculously niche, more of a showcase than anything.
  • r3loaded - Tuesday, March 25, 2014 - link

Double the card for triple the price. That's the Nvidia way!
  • Nagorak - Tuesday, March 25, 2014 - link

Less than double since it has to be clocked lower.
  • The_Assimilator - Wednesday, March 26, 2014 - link

So how's that dual-GPU Hawaii card working out for you?
  • Gadgety - Tuesday, March 25, 2014 - link

"I do wonder if part of the $3000 pricing is in reaction to GTX Titan undercutting Tesla sales." Yep, me too.
  • mapesdhs - Thursday, March 27, 2014 - link

Possibly, but if they've priced it too high for the pro market then it simply won't sell, plus it's not
suitable for certain types of pro tasks anyway, eg. those that must have ECC RAM. Other pro
tasks don't exploit 64fp, in which case the 6GB 780 makes more sense (though why the 6GB
    was put on a 780 and not a 780Ti I cannot figure).

  • aggiechase37 - Tuesday, March 25, 2014 - link

I guess I'm just not seeing the draw. I can get two Titan blacks or this (essentially the exact same thing but less power draw) for a grand more? What am I missing here?
  • Nagorak - Tuesday, March 25, 2014 - link

    "What am I missing here?"

You should be spending that money on something more worthwhile, like say a trip to Europe.
  • boeush - Tuesday, March 25, 2014 - link

What you're missing, is that you can get a pair of Z's for $4,000 more, and thereby have 4 full GK110's running inside your dual-card box (and you'll probably need a refrigerator-sized cooling unit to service that box...)

    ;-)
  • aggiechase37 - Wednesday, March 26, 2014 - link

Haha. Yeah I don't think I will need that sort of computational power anytime soon. Talk to me again in 2 years when we have this sort of thing in our phones though.
  • DIYEyal - Thursday, May 8, 2014 - link

    Lower clock speeds..
  • Alecanto - Tuesday, March 25, 2014 - link

Does anyone else feel like Nvidia and Intel both need to step back and let software catch up to hardware? I mean is there any game out now or coming in the near future that's going to actually use 6 GB's of VRAM or 8 processor cores? If there is I would like to know because I want a reason to upgrade from a 4700k and a gtx 780, but I'm not seeing any right now(In fact it's overkill for the 99% of games). I understand that gamer's aren't their only target and that many will buy a card like this without having to worry about budget, but I'm rooting for Nvidia to take the throne from Sony and Microsoft (we all know they want to), but I'm not sure that releasing these ridiculously priced products will help them achieve that.
  • Assimilator87 - Wednesday, March 26, 2014 - link

4K Surround with SSAA? I don't know. I'm just guessing.
  • sascha - Wednesday, March 26, 2014 - link

  • tim851 - Thursday, March 27, 2014 - link

"Does anyone else feel like Nvidia and Intel both need to step back and let software catch up to hardware?"

Why? Does anybody force you to upgrade?

"Let's stop the manufacturing lines, Alecanto doesn't need our products. He promised he'll call when he wants something new."

    Talk about entitlement issues...
  • SilthDraeth - Tuesday, March 25, 2014 - link

    Can it play Crysis?
  • beck2050 - Wednesday, March 26, 2014 - link

Absolutely awesome! Now that's what I'm talking about. Halo dreams Btw I have no doubt that the rich 1% ers will grab every last one. That's where the money is these days.
  • BradCube - Wednesday, March 26, 2014 - link

I realise most people are going to think this is absurd waste of money, but I was pretty excited to hear the announcement. From the perspective of video production world, this is an awesome way to get 4 extremely well performing GPU's into my system while only taking up 4 slots leaving me room for RAID, Video IO, and a Red Rocket or audio expansion all within the one enclosure. Density comes at a cost I suppose.

I'm guessing it's more my demographic that this product is really targeted towards. Or perhaps exuberant small form factor PC's that can only afford to give two slots to GPU? Can imagine cooling this guy in an enclosure that small to be pretty challenging however...
  • The_Assimilator - Wednesday, March 26, 2014 - link

    It's a triple-slot card.
  • BradCube - Thursday, March 27, 2014 - link

Doh! Well now I feel like an idiot :P.

Still should equate to some decent space savings in comparision to 4 double slot cards.

  • sascha - Wednesday, March 26, 2014 - link

    Nice card.
  • Shadowmaster625 - Wednesday, March 26, 2014 - link

It wouldnt be worth $3000 even if it was 20nm and the card only had a TDP of 240W. But at least then you could argue the case for it. As it is, its just a fed funny money grab.
  • mapesdhs - Thursday, March 27, 2014 - link

An item is only ever worth what someone is willing to pay.

If a professional can use this card to complete a task that results in a much greater
return (by whatever means), then the investment will more than pay for itself, in
which case the price isn't a problem at all.

This is why SGI was able to sell IR-based RealityCentre systems for a million+,
because companies that used them (eg. oil/gas) recovered their investment
often in just a single session using the system. In the case of oil exploration,
being able to more accurately determine where not to drill based on stereo
visulation of GIS data; every failed test drill wastes a lot of money, so a better
hit rate made the RealityCentres an excellent investment.

When I was an admin of a R.C. in the early 2000s, I asked an oil company guy
about this; he estimated their $1.5M R.C. cost was recouped in just 6 seconds.

Same concept applies today. The AE guy I know told me the most important
thing for him is interactive responsive while working with the app, being able to
see the results of changes as quickly as possible, which means he can make
decisions about what to do sooner, or experiment with more alternatives in the
same time frame. Thus, spending more on something that enables this will
pay off in the long term.

While I raised an eyebrow at the 1000$ difference between bying two Titan Blacks and the Z I wouldn't call anyone greedy.

If it helps Nvidia push out good midrange cards for me at better prices it's just silly complaining
  • MrManchego - Thursday, March 27, 2014 - link

this is the kind of GPU necessary to run truly immersive VR...
  • Sabresiberian - Friday, March 28, 2014 - link

As I see it, there are 2 problems with this otherwise impressive piece of gear -

    1) it won't be all that long until Maxwell flagship products come out. I don't "need" to replace my graphics cards right now, and I'm going to wait for Maxwell in any case. Early indications is that it will be well worth waiting for.

    2) Price. 2 Titan Blacks would cost $800 less. 2 GTX 780Ti's would cost as much as $1600 less. So, the only way this would make sense is that you wanted to install 2 of them on a mainboard that couldn't handle 4 separate discreet cards. And, really, how likely is someone that can afford $6000 for their video solution to own a mainboard with only 2 PCIe 3.0 slots?

As far as it being some kind of productivity card and not intended for gaming - well, it might be used for that more often than for gaming, as are the previous Titans, but it is being sold by Nvidia as "the most powerful graphics card for gaming ever released" (I just received an Nvidia newsletter in which the Titan Z is described just that way). Despite Nvidia's billing though, I do think they are intending to reap the benefit of its suitability for purposes other than gaming, a part of the industry in which the graphics solutions cost a lot more than $3000.

So, that $3000 might look extreme for someone building or upgrading a gaming rig (it certainly does to me), but looking at it from the perspective of a professional using it in a productivity scenario - it is a bargain. :)
  • mpdugas - Friday, March 28, 2014 - link

...and it still vents all that warmth INSIDE the case; the standard Nvidia cooler design is the best for avoiding that.

  • Smartgent - Monday, March 31, 2014 - link

Give me a break Nvidia, 2K would have been plenty of profit, but really are you trying to price yourself out of the market. Your cards offer nothing "extrodinary" that I cannot achive with 2 cards at 1/3 the price...Someone in charges needs to get a clue.
  • perpetualdark - Wednesday, April 2, 2014 - link

I can buy a Mustang GT, put a supercharger on it, some good tires, upgrade the suspension, and for ~$45,000 blow the doors off every supercar on the road. But if you don't understand the difference between a Lamborghini, Lexus LFA, Ferrari, or Aston Martin Vanquish versus a modified Mustang, then you shouldn't own anything other than a Mustang. And frankly, if it is good enough for you, why would you get offended that someone else has a different opinion?

BTW, if all you are running is one of these "Z" cards on your dual GPU mobo, then you are missing the point of it completely. The article clearly states that this is not an issue of cost vs processing power but rather an issue of density.
  • Smartgent - Friday, April 4, 2014 - link

In response- I have 2 R9 290's XFX DD editions in my computer, I could easily run 3-6 monitors if I choose too. My Motherboard is an Asus Sabertooth x79 running a I7 3820 with 32GB of ram. 2 SSD'd and a 2 Hard drives. It is fast!! it is the Grand National GTX of the computer world. I have never bought the $1000.00 CPU's or the $1200 GPU cards. I have had my entire system watercooled and practically silent.

That card is not like an Lamborghini at all, because unless it is water cooled you will NEVER be able to run 2 of them in one system, there will be way too much heat exhausted into the case. 500 Watts is a ton of heat. I know, I fight thermal load all the time in my system that can generate 800 watts, on air cooling.

My system scores in the top 95 -99% of all benchmarks out there. I can run BF4 in ultra at 130- 160 FPS on a 1080p monitor. It is smooth as class on Mantle. on one card, I average 90-120, plus I only paid $900 for the two cards. That Card is not going to beat my two cards, I can assure you that.

In the end it is nothing but marketing to get a premium markup for an Item that isn't worth it, just like a Mercedes, but I would NEVER call it a Lamborghini, because it would have to be FAST!!
  • Smartgent - Friday, April 4, 2014 - link

Besides, why would I spend that kind of money on one cards, when I could have 4 and blow it away. The Lamborghini analogy would only hold true, if we could only put one card in our systems.

They need to release Maxwell and quit screwing around "milking the market"

  • jbrandt5 - Tuesday, April 1, 2014 - link

Why do many make accusations of greed? Do you not know that the higher the production the cheaper the price can be? Find an old metal man and ask him to fab you a fender for your car.
If it can be done for 3000 bucks I doubt it, but they mass produce them for 200. Before you scream greed let me know if you will work a couple hours off the clock pro bono first.
  • iAPX - Wednesday, April 2, 2014 - link

    $3000?!? This is a joke???
  • TruBlu - Friday, April 4, 2014 - link

We shouldn't be surprised by the price. Two blacks with all cores enabled + 12gb of vram on one pcb.
  • ThatHKDude - Saturday, April 5, 2014 - link

You guys heard about the new R9 295 X2 that's coming out on April 8th? Damn I'd love to see how these two cards compare... Though I know for sure that the AMD one will most certainly be a hell of a lot cheaper than this card.
  • Diminias - Monday, April 7, 2014 - link

I understand that density costs money. But I don't see this card as being a huge draw. If you have enough cash to drop on this card you might as well go out and buy yourself an X79 board with more PCIe slots on it. In the end you could buy Titan Blacks for less and get more out of them due to the underclocking on the Titan Z. I think there are more economical ways to achieve this level of performance. This is simply Nvidia catering to the highend market or the window shoppers. Its impressive, but out of my price range.
  • klepp0906 - Monday, April 28, 2014 - link

Well since my original post is (apparently spam?) I can only venture that you guys have an agreement with nvidia to avoid negative press?

I won't re type it or anything close. Already got all the effort out of me I'm willing to denote to it.

With that said - this will fall on it's face.

To those who are un informed. In any OS newer than 7 SLI does not work in surround. It hasn't since I've owned my FOUR titans. I've saved months of dialogue between myself and nvidia - until they started ignoring the problem.

Spending 10k on a PC for 25fps in ffxiv and wildstar (you read that right) while soloing, is a travesty.

Hugely disappointed in myself for caving to fanboyism. This PC was supposed to tide me over for years. So far it has for a year, with similar performance to 1 gtx480 id imagine.

Before trying to ride further on your name, how about you guys release proper software for the cards already on the market? While your at it hire some new mods - csr on your site is miserable and that's in comparison to operations a fraction of your size. Being ignored by several staff for over a month now?

I've offered logs, screenshots, video, my suggestions and others with the same issues. Yet kicking out new hardware seems to trump it by a mile.

Fwiw I'm still trying to sell the 4 titans and go amd for the first time. The fact I can't sell them is testament enough.
  • JohnnyMcCaffery - Thursday, May 1, 2014 - link

Know offence to Nvidia, but would it be better and cheaper to SLI two TITAN GPU's than to buy the Titan Z!

ATI Radeon is No 1 they kick NVidia ass with latest beast R9 295X2 8 GB incredible performance for 1500 dollars and greedy NVidia selling TitanZ for 3500 dollars and THEY HAVE SLOWER CARD hahaha. Thats ridiculous corporation behavior..NVidia is counting on 10-15 percent of extreme patients who will buy that card just because is NVidia..Their marketing is literally brainwashing. They watch customers like peace of meat. NVidia did not expect this huge surprise from ATI Radeon, shame on you NVidia greedy assh***s to demand ridiculous price for your GARBAGE,and R9 295X2 8 GB have incredible water cooling, better quallity and incredible inovations, and you giving poor pathetic air cooler solution. NVidia has create most cheapest product possible in terms of manifacturing but for insane price. Thats why pathetic NVidia is still delaying Titan Z they are overclocking a cpu core and memory to try to be beter than competition, but thats not gona work. NVidia has going into insanity, what you think you are??! Only insane idiot would buy TitanZ. Many people share this opinion on world wide forums. Its time to Ati Radeon become a leader, many people has changed their opinion who cares for name on GPU,performance per dollar is most important

I call them liars, criminals and frauders who in purposely make very poor drivers and voltage variations in order to trick the customers to buy most expensive cards.People have right to know everything. And shame on you for giving DirectX 12 to all cards, including 4 year old Fermi and to remind entire gaming community just few months ago they did not give DX11.2 to enthusiasts with DX11.1 High expensive cards, they had say that not possible because of lack of chips on GPU,and now they are giving even better technology. You are commiting crime. You you show once more that everything is controlled by software, that NVidia programmers are controlling everything. No matter how much you removing me i will come back, and i will return on all networks. I will make a hell to all of you
